April Chamber Business Spotlight: Custer Care

Custer Care, an adult day service center was started by Jeanette Denson and Barb Cramer in 1991 with the help of 60 community persons who purchased shares of stock for a down payment for a SBA loan to purchase a building. Transportation services were added to assist families in getting to the adult day service and to medical appointments.

In 1999, the Grace Varney home was purchased in Broken Bow to house the adult day service and to have five rooms for assisted living and respite services. The previous building was sold for a new child care center. In 2000, Custer Care started doing home care services in Broken Bow and the surrounding areas. They offer housekeeping, personal care, meal preparation, and assistance with medications for one to twenty-four hours per day.

Assisted Living facilities at Custer Care

Their expansion continued in 2007 when Custer Care started doing home care in the Valley and Greeley counties. In June 2008, a home was purchased at 1020 South 2nd in Broken Bow to add eight more rooms for assisted living. The assisted living rooms are normally full but they do keep a waiting list. Home Health and Hospice services are also available in their homes. With the addition of a handicapped van in 2009, their transportation services have increased.

Since 1991, their staff has grown from three employees to thirty-three in 2012 and Custer Care is currently hiring in the Valley County area. Thirty-four percent of their staff is over the age of 65. They served 102 people in 2011 in adult day services, assisted living, and home care services.

Being a locally owned business, Custer Care appreciates the value of buying locally. Jeanette states, “We believe that when staff work in their hometown, they are able to have money to shop locally.” Custer Care would like to thank the citizens in the area for helping them to provide the needed services. Jeanette also states, “We plan to continue serving people in Custer and surrounding counties for many years when and where they need us.”
