Celebrating Four Years- CCC Ord Learning Center

September has been an exciting and busy month for the Central Community College Ord Learning Center! The Learning Center is celebrating four years of establishment and the final month of a three-year $175,105 USDA RCDI grant that was awarded to CCC in 2011 to support a project focused on mobilizing, educating, coaching and supporting community members to assist in strategic planning efforts to improved economic development efforts in the Greeley, Sherman and Valley county regions. Along with the establishment of the CCC Ord Learning Center, the goals of this grant were to fund the development and implementation of plans to help stop the flow of outmigration, strengthen local leadership, engage youth, encourage entrepreneurship and build foundation endowments to support future efforts in the Greeley, Sherman and Valley county areas. Central Community College partnered with the Central Community College Foundation, Nebraska Community Foundation, Heartland Center for Leadership Development and Center for Rural Entrepreneurship to support in-kind match dollar grant requirements.

Since the December 2011 Convening Session Kick-Off we have recorded over 600 people (representing all three counties) who have registered for one or more of the trainings/workshops offered through the RCDI Project. Grant activities have included a Business Transitions Workshop, Estate Planning Workshop, E-Commerce Workshop, Strategic Planning Training, Leadership Development, Business Discovery Day and Community Builders Events. A new workshop, Career Discovery Day was established and will be held September 24th 2014 to assist high school juniors in making academic and career decisions to meet their career goals as they explore their interest, abilities and values with a CCC career counselor and/or community mentor.  Career Discovery Day will become an annual event alongside Business Discovery Day, which will have its third workshop on October 22nd 2014.

One of the most impactful outcomes of the RCDI grant project has been the formation of partnerships among CCC, the Valley, Greeley and Sherman county schools, the Valley County Economic Development Board, Valley County Philanthropic Partners and the Valley County Community Foundation. The RCDI project has expanded CCC’s offerings and created new opportunities for career and technical training, academic and career planning services, professional and continuing education classes, entrepreneurship development, business succession planning and youth leadership and engagement. In addition, the project has provided easier access to higher education in the three-county region. Central Community College is committed to continuing investing in the area by supporting the services of the Ord Learning Center, including community projects such as the Big Give to Valley County, Synovation Valley Leadership Academy, Business Discovery Day, Career Discovery Day, Community Builders, rural development initiative and community partnerships.

We are incredibly thankful for the time, talent and treasure that so many of the Greeley, Sherman and Valley County community members devoted towards the success of this project.  We are excited to have the opportunity to continue serving the tri-county area.
