Full Steam Ahead for the Ord Aquatic Center

Thousands of volunteer hours and donations have been invested since 2013 in order to align funds needed to replace the Ord swimming pool, which was constructed in 1978. These investments will result in a new aquatic center featuring zero-depth entry, four 25-yard lap lanes, water spray/play features, 1- and 3-meter diving boards, a 170-linear foot flume side, several shade areas, a bathhouse with concessions, and an attached splash pad featuring approximately 14 play features. We would like to extend a heart-felt thank-you to the many volunteers, donors, and city employees that have brought us to this point. Fundraising for a replacement swimming pool in began in 2013 and have continued since. To date, nearly $3.3 million of public and private money has been aligned for the project.

Per the feasibility study completed by JEO Consulting Group in 2013, the plan up to this point has been to construct the new facility east of the existing swimming pool in order to avoid disruption of the 2018 swimming season. By adding a splash pad, paved off-street parking, an at-grade drop-off area, and conducting a closer review of site elevations and existing amenities, our plan must change. Locating the newly designed aquatic center east of the current swimming pool would be akin to putting a round peg in a square hole; it just will not fit. Doing so would result in an undesirable layout and have negative impacts to current park amenities, including removal of the existing picnic shelter and several mature shade trees.

To achieve the best possible layout of the new facility while preserving existing amenities such as the picnic shelter and mature trees, it has been determined that the best plan is to locate the aquatic center where the existing swimming pool is located. Although the ideal layout, this new plan will result in the loss of a swimming pool for the 2018 swimming season. Demolition of the existing swimming pool and bath house began today and bid awards for the new facility is set for October 2, 2017.

To make the best of this situation, the City of Ord is working with JEO to complete the splash pad portion of the project as early as July 1, 2018. This timeline is contingent upon many variables, including favorable weather conditions. Unknowns will remain for some time regarding the splash pad’s hours of operation. There may be days when the splash pad’s close proximity to the swimming pool construction zone will result in conditions unfavorable for its use. These details will be worked through as we near completion of the splash pad.

Despite the loss of the 2018 swimming season, we are very excited that the new facility and its numerous amenities will open in 2019 to serve area residents and visitors for the next half-century. Below you can find 2D and 3D illustrations of the new facility. To view larger click on the image.
