Ord,
the county seat of Valley County, is located in central Nebraska. The city
is served by Nebraska Highways 70 and 11. Ord is 63 miles northwest of Grand
Island, 71 miles northeast of Kearney, 165 miles northwest of Lincoln, and

Natural gas is supplied to the community of Ord by K N Energy, Inc. through four-inch transmission pipelines with an operating pressure of approximately 800-1,000 pounds per square inch. K N Energy is also the distributor of natural gas within the community, serving approximately 1,040 residential, commercial, and industrial customers.
Natural gas is available for residential and commercial uses. Availability of natural gas for industrial uses is subject to individual situations. LP gas is available for residential, commercial and industrial uses at Trotter Fertilizer and Propane.
Oil is available for residential, commercial and industrial uses at Carl's Standard Service, G & R Service, Spalding Cooperative Elevator Company, and Van's Service Station.
The municipal water system in Ord is supplied by three wells, which have an average depth of 265 feet. The system has a maximum capacity of 3,768,000 gallons per day. Groundwater is available for industrial uses. A 300-foot well will produce 600 to 800 gallons of water per minute. The quality of water in Ord does not necessitate a water treatment plant.
Ord has a municipal sanitary sewerage system and a storm-sewer system. The lagoon-type treatment plant has a daily capacity of 986,000 gallons.
Privately owned waste removal services are available in Ord.
Ord is served by Nebraska Central Railroad Company (NCRC). The track, leased from the Union Pacific Railroad from Grand Island to Ord, is serviced by NCRC crews daily. Interchanges are made with the Union Pacific Railroad.
Nebraska Highways 70 (northeast-southwest) and 11 (northwest-southeast) serve Ord. Local load limits are not imposed on these highways. Interstate 80 is seventy miles south and Interstate 29 is 217 miles east of Ord.
K Truck Lines, Inc., serves the Ord area with Interstate and Intrastate deliveries. They have five (5) trucks daily.
The nearest through-bus-service is provided by Greyhound Bus Lines at Grand Island, 63 miles southeast of Ord.
The Handi-Bus provides transportation on Wednesdays to downtown Ord for all citizens.
The hospital van provides transportation Monday through Friday, for the elderly, low-income, and disabled in the Ord area. A $.50 donation is requested per ride. Rides can be scheduled through the Outpatient Department at Valley County Hospital by calling (308) 728-5581.
The Evelyn Sharp Field, one mile north of Ord, has a 4,500-foot, lighted, concrete runway and a 2,700-foot turf runway. Other facilities include Unicom, flight instruction, fuel, hangars, and tie downs. One of the 13 private planes hangared there is available for charter. The elevation at the airport is 2,069 feet, the latitude is 41 degree 37' 41" N, and the longitude is 98 degree 57' 10" W.
The Central Nebraska Regional Airport near Grand Island,
63 miles, and the Kearney Municipal Airport, 71 miles, are the nearest points
of scheduled air service. Passenger, air freight, and air express services
are available.
The Ord Township Library, open to the public daily, contains 18,500 volumes and has an average annual circulation of 32,500. The library has an automated circulation and catalog system and offers public access to CD-Rom and on-line services. Library services include interlibrary loan and reference, home delivery to shut-ins, active children's programming, and a meeting room. A member of the 17-county Meridian Library System, the library is accredited with the Nebraska Library Commission and has a certified director.
