Wozab Fund gives $30,700 in grants to Valley County

Lincoln–John and Alyce Wozab created a gift that keeps on growing and a legacy that lasts forever when they established an endowment through the Nebraska Community Foundation.

In 1998, according to their wishes, an estate bequest of $1.2 million established the John & Alyce Wozab Memorial Fund to enhance the quality of life and create new opportunities in Valley County.

Over the past 13 years, the Fund has reinvested more than $545,000 to benefit dozens of community programs and thousands of individual citizens in Valley County.  Each year grants are made from the earnings on the endowment, yet the endowment continues to grow.  It now has $1.28 million in assets.

John and Alyce Wozab’s endowed gift ensures that their love for their community and their generous giving will continue for generations to come.

Nebraska Community Foundation handles the financial management of the Wozab Fund and each year works with the Valley County Board of Supervisors, which serves as the Fund Advisory Committee in making grants back to the community. The committee reviews funding proposals from organizations that provide important services throughout the county.  In March 2012, the committee approved 33 of the 38 funding requests it received and awarded a total of $30,700 to help support a broad range of community projects and programs:

Parks and Recreation — $5,750, including grants to support softball, wrestling, youth football, baseball, basketball and summer camp programs.

Youth Engagement and Development — $4,850, for programs including Heartland Youth Ranch, Cornhusker Girls State, 4-H community beatification projects, youth mission trips, and an entrepreneurship discovery day camp.

Public Safety $4,500, to area fire and rescue units for 10 self-contained breathing apparatuses, training for EMTs, and automated external defibrillators  (AED) for Ord Jr/Sr High School and Comstock Volunteer Fire Dept.

Libraries — $3,950, to Ord Township Library, Arcadia Township Library and North Loup Public Library to support children’s reading programs and building repair.

Health Care — $3,750, for early childhood development and parenting education, an air conditioning unit at Senior Classics of Valley County, and a recumbent stepper for the Valley View Living Center.

Economic Development — $2,000 to support an intern for implementation of Vision Valley County 2020.

Historic Preservation — $1,000 for improvements to the Valley County Historical Society building.

Community Infrastructure – $900 to the purchase welcome banners for Arcadia and a flag and flagpole at Aubles Pond.

Other Programs — $4,000 for St. John’s Lutheran Halloween and Thanksgiving community events,  Loup Valley Popcorn Days and Arcadia’s Fall Festival.

John and Alyce Wozab were life-long residents of Ord and Valley County. They were involved in the abstracting , title insurance and real estate and sales business for more than 45 years, and John was the Valley County Veteran’s Service Officer for 46 years.  They are just two examples of Nebraskans and former Nebraskans who have left legacies to their hometowns.
