Loup Rivers Scenic Byway Rails to Trails Project

We’re pleased to announce the formal investigation into a rail-to-trail project between Ord and Burwell. Dubbed the Loup Rivers Scenic Byway Rails to Trails Project (gasp!), project proposes to construct a hard surface trail from the Auble’s Pond Walking Trail in Ord to the Burwell City Park.  This trail will be approximately 17 miles in length and would preserve the abandoned rail bed along Hwy 11 between Ord and Burwell. We are hoping to leverage a million-dollar transportation enhancement grant to secure the resources necessary to construct the trail.

As a part of that investigation, our local coalition is requesting proposals for professional services to help Valley and Garfield Counties understand the costs and scope of developing a hike/bike trail along the scenic Loup Rivers Scenic Byway. The request for proposal can be downloaded here.

Over the course of the next several months, our coalition will be investigating the feasibility of the trail, what it will cost and how long it would take to implement the scope of the project. If the signs are favorable, we will begin a major fundraising and volunteer drive in 2012.

North Bend Rail to Trail north56We still NEED volunteers for this project. If you are interested in becoming a donor of your time or your resources, please contact Janie Zadina at ordnebraska@frontier.com. Our local community volunteers have been instrumental in creating and implementing successful projects in our area during the past decade. Please consider helping us close the deal and build a trail between Burwell and Ord!
