Major Improvements Ahead for Davis Creek Recreation Area

A world of opportunities in the outdoors await residents and visitors to Valley County. Be it an overnight adventure, the thrill of a hunt, or a leisurely family walk along quiet tree-lined streets, you can find it in Valley County. For many, this satisfaction is found at one of the many bodies of water and camping areas that we are fortunate to have. One of those is about to get even better.

Davis Creek Recreation Area, nestled 9 minutes south of North Loup, currently has 25 camping spots with no electrical hook-ups. It boasts an ADA compliant fishing pier, a boat dock, and covered picnic areas. NRD General Manager Leon “Butch” Koehlmoos said that on holiday weekends, the facility has exceeded capacity, with campers utilizing areas not intended for that use. The popularity of the recreation area has led to a unanimous decision by the NRD Board to nearly triple the number of camping sites and add key amenities to the recreation area.

A major renovation, the project includes adding 42 new camp sites with electrical hook-ups, a shower house, and vault toilets. Over half of the project’s cost will be offset by $428,000 in federal funds from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Work is expected to begin later this summer and should be complete by the fall. Koehlmoos said that a second expansion phase will then be considered, including a second boat ramp, a fish cleaning station, an RV sanitary dump, and a new parking area.

The fresh air of Valley County is best experienced as it wafts through open screens of a tent or camper. Numerous locations through the area provide you with the opportunity to welcome the night air as you sleep soundly in the beautiful surroundings. Already a prime spot for superb hunting and fishing, the expansion of Davis Creek Recreation Area will further enhance outdoor recreation opportunities in Valley County. Join us won’t you?
