New Wozab Scholarship Deadline is March 13, 2015

The Valley County Board of Supervisors have announced a pilot round of nontraditional scholarships to benefit Valley County residents through the John and Alyce Wozab Memorial Fund.

The Wozab Memorial Fund will set aside $5,000 in 2015 to fund non-traditional scholarships in Valley County. Nontraditional scholarships are awarded to adults who are interested in furthering their education to advance their career or to pursue a new career.

Scholarship awards will go to residents of Valley County that have plans to fill a current workforce gap by pursuing studies at an accredited college, university, technical school, community college or junior college to gain certification needed to pursue a skilled trade. Trade fields identified as needs in Valley County are:

HVAC Technician
Appliance repair
Construction (contractors, carpenters, landscape designers)
Heavy equipment operator
Legal aide
Culinary art
Ag equipment technician (pivot, tractor, diesel)
Automotive technician
Skilled manufacturing
Law enforcement
Administrative assistant
Information technology

Nontraditional scholarships can be powerful tools in meeting current workforce gaps. By focusing on adults that are already deeply connected to the Valley County area, we can build a stronger knowledge base that invigorates the Valley County community and stimulates wealth creation in Valley County.

By using the trade field information from Valley County Economic Development, Wozab Memorial Scholarship recipients will gain skills in areas that meet the needs of local employers and give recipients some certainty that there will be a job waiting for them when they complete their education. At the most recent Business Discovery Day, 26 open, full-time positions were marketed – showing a clear demand for skilled trades in the area.

Selection preference will be given to applicants that have lived and worked in Valley County for at least four years and whose additional education and skills will benefit the local community and economy. The Wozab Advisory Committee will serve as the Scholarship Selection Committee. The deadline to apply is March 13th, 2015.

Applications are available from the Valley County Clerk’s Office, 125 S 15th, Ord NE 68862, phone 308/728-3700, or email .  You can also download an application here.  Applicants will be notified of awards.
