Star Gazing Party Planned

Fort Hartsuff Star Gazing Party – Saturday, August 27th beginning at 8:30 p.m.

The first annual Fort Hartsuff Star Gazing Party will be held on Saturday, August 27th, starting around 8:00 p.m.  The Fort offers a wide open parade ground and plenty of dark skies. The flat wide open area is free of light pollution and tall obstacles and should be a great place for astronomers and star gazers to get a clear view of the stars.

Dan Glomski, Assistant Director and Program Coordinator for the Nebraska Nature and Visitor Center will be giving a presentation at approximately 8:30 p.m. on how to use a telescope and some points on astronomy and viewing the night sky. Sunset is predicted to be at 8:07 p.m. with twilight between 9:10 and 9:30. In case of rain or cloud cover, the star gazing party will be rescheduled for a Friday or Saturday night in late September or sometime in October.

Dan is expecting there to be three to five telescopes for the public to share, but encourages star gazers to bring their own binoculars and telescopes as well.

Lights will go off by 9:30 p.m. and Park Superintendent, Jim Domeier, encourages star gazers to have their vehicles parked and all lights turned off before 9:30. Star gazers will be able to tent camp at the Fort, but should have their tents, sleeping bags, lawn chairs, etc. set up before dusk.  Guests are encouraged to rubber band several layers of red cellophane over their flashlights and bring mosquito repellant with them to the park. Astronomers caution viewers not to spray repellants close to telescopes or binoculars as lenses could be damaged.

A Nebraska State Park entry permit is required to enter the park. A $4.00 daily permit can be purchased at the Fort office for those who do not have the annual permit. Friends of Fort Hartsuff will be accepting donations at the park to help promote and preserve Fort Hartsuff and fund future events.
